If you have one or more disabilities, the state or federal government may help you with several types of expenses – not just health care. You’ll find government grants at both the state and federal level, giving you several options to get the financial help you need.
The government provides disability grants for children, adults, and veterans assisting with medical care, making their home accessible, education needs, and more. Keep reading to learn more about how you could qualify for a government grant.
Types of Government Grants
Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits
The Social Security Administration manages Social Security Insurance (SSI), one of the most comprehensive benefits anyone with a disability can get. Covered disabilities can be physical (such as a spinal cord injury) or emotional (such as a diagnosed anxiety disorder) to qualify for benefits. SSI helps those unable to work with the daily cost of living for at least 12 months.
USDA Rural Home Grants
The USDA offers disability grant money to persons with disabilities that live in a rural area. The grant helps pay to make a home more accessible. Some USDA Rural Home Grants also help you buy an accessible home if you don’t already own a home. Find more information here.
Division of Coal Mine Workers' Compensation (DCMWC) Assistance
The Division of Coal Mine Workers' Compensation helps coal miners suffering from Black Lung Disease file claims for benefits and payments if their disease relates to working in the mines. The grant also supports surviving spouses of miners that lost their lives due to Black Lung Disease.
Early Intervention Program for Children With Disabilities
This state-run program provides services to children ages three and under with physical, mental, cognitive, and social disability assistance. The program helps pay for appropriate services to help the children at home and through the school system. Check with your local state government for information relevant to your location.
Grants for Disabled Business Owners
Disabled business owners have several grant options through the Small Business Administration and Grants.gov. Many private foundations also help foster economic stimulation (in essence, help to grow or start a business) by helping disabled business owners with funding issues.
Specially Housing Adaptation Grant for Veterans
The Specially Housing Adaptation helps veterans purchase an accessible home or make changes to an existing home. The maximum award for disabled veterans under this grant varies from year to year, and it must be used to help make independent living possible. For example, if your home is not wheelchair accessible, you can use the funds to install ramps. Other improvements include widening doorways and hallways, retrofitting a bathroom, modifying steps, and improving lighting.
Low Income Energy Assistance Grant
Each state offers assistance for low-income families to pay heating and cooling bills – there is no requirement relating to disability. However, priority for this type of assistance is given (early application dates) to the disabled. Utility assistance is available at both the state and federal level.
How to Apply for Grants for the Disabled
Each grant program has different requirements for disability grants. You can't apply for all of them at once – visit the appropriate website for the grant you wish to apply for and follow the directions.
The first step is to contact your local and state government offices, or visit their website, to find out what options you have locally.
If you need assistance or are unsure where to start, contact the National Council on Disability, the IRS, or the US Department of Labor.
If you have a disability that makes it hard to make ends meet, these programs are meant for you. They are designed specifically to help people in your situation. If you aren't approved for some benefits, don't give up – exhaust all options for federal, state, and local grant opportunities for individuals with disabilities. With plenty of financial assistance, you and your family members could improve the quality of life you experience, and live more comfortable lives.
